Nanny's Avocado Dip
"Nanny's Cookbook"(Dorothy Bishop)
This is how Nanny made it. As you may be aware, Nanny didn't use a written recipe, they were
all in her head. This is another recipe that I wrote down one day while she made Avocado Salad
to go with her famous enchiladas. Well, "I" think they are pretty famous. |

Mel's Shortbread
"My Cookbook"(Melinda Winslow)
I was simply trying to be creative one day. While living in Germany I did a lot of cooking
and baking. Having never made a true shortbread before I decided to give one a try, but
instead of making one from a recipe I took four different recipes and created one from like
ingredients. This turned out to be a nice treat. Note, no eggs, we have serveral friends
that are vegetarian and this works out great.... |

Banana Nut Bread
"My Cookbook"(Melinda Winslow)
This is a really nice Banana Nut Bread. I make this any time the bananas get a bit dark, it's
a good excuse. I've heard that you can let bananas get ripe and then freeze them for later
use. Just freeze in the peel, the peels will turn completely brown but when you are ready to
use simply remove from the freezer and let thaw at room temperature.(I have never tried this
myself) |

Mom's Zucchini Bread
"Mom's Cookbook"(Mary Steapp)
This zucchini bread recipe was handed down by my grandmother(Dorothy Bishop) to my mom (Mary Steapp).
I remember this recipe from the 1970's. They both made this often and kept a few loafs in the
deep-freeze so they would always have something baked when it was desired at the last minute.
The classic combination of cinnamon and nuts makes a great little loaf of bread. Freezes well. |

Nanny's Homemade Bread
"Nanny's Cookbook"(Dorothy Bishop)
One of those recipes that I wrote down one day while Nanny lovingly measured out each of
the ingredients and waited patiently for me to write "something" down. I remember her saving
coffee cans to make bread in. This was a Saturday routine for a long time when I was a young
girl. Mom and I would go to Nanny and Grandpa's and have coffee and fresh bread!!! mmmm.... |

Nanny's Dinner Rolls
"Nanny's Cookbook"(Dorothy Bishop)
I can hardly remember a Sunday dinner with Nanny and Grandpa that we didn't have Nanny's
Dinner Rolls. This is another recipe that I wrote down one day while Nanny lovingly measured
out each ingredient, (something she was not accustomed to doing) but she was very patient as I
wrote down everything she said. This is also a recipe that I made while in Germany, it truely
was fun to go back and make many things from scratch that we had on a regular basis when I was
growing up. |

Tortillas de Harina
"My Cookbook"(from Mrs. Taylor)
When I was in Mrs. Taylors Home-ec class, in the 7th grade, she had an hispanic friend
come to our class and teach us how to make flour tortillas from scratch! Wow, this was
truely one of my favorite days in school. The lady worked with each one of us to make
sure we were getting the hang of it... it does take practice. I continued to make these
for years to come and I still make them today... just not quite as often. |

Corn Tortillas
"My Cookbook"(Melinda Winslow)
One thing you don't find in Germany is tortillas. We brought a tortilla press from
the states and learned to make our own. These are a bit different than store bought,
with the main difference being how thin they get theirs. The taste is much the same.
We have gotten used to these and will probably not buy store bought again even when
we do go back to the states. |

"Nanny's Cookbook"(Dorothy Bishop)
This is a cookie recipe that it took me a long time to get. I remember Nanny would make these
cookies from scratch almost every Saturday when Mom and I would go over and have coffee. I
kept asking her for the recipe but it was in her head, she said she had no idea how to write
it down. So, one day I had her measure each thing she put into the bowl while I wrote it all
down. Now we have her recipe! I hope you enjoy these as much as I do. |

Toll House Cookies
"from the Toll House chip bag"
** wikipedia says: The chocolate-chip cookie, also known as the Toll House Cookie, was
accidentally developed by Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn near
Whitman, Massachusetts, in 1937. Wakefield was making chocolate cookies but ran
out of regular baker's chocolate and substituted broken pieces of semi-sweet
chocolate, assuming it would melt and mix into the batter. It did not, and the
cookie with chips of chocolate was born. (The restaurant, housed in a former toll
house built in 1709, burned down in 1984.)
Today, half the cookies baked in American homes are chocolate-chip, with an estimated
seven billion consumed annually. |
